A Letter to the University President About the Canteen Service

May 31st,2010    by Ann

Campus

Dear Mr. President,

I'm very lucky to attend this world-famous university, but I' afraid I'm not content with the canteen service on campus.

Firstly, the quality of the dishes should be improvec Undoubtedly, there are a lot of delicious dishes, but all the year they are the same. More and more students are complaining about eating the same food each day. So I think the most urgent problem variety.

Secondly, the price is a bit too high. Many of us hope that the canteen can provide us with not only delicious but also cheaper food

Finally, the environment is so noisy that we can't enjoy our meals in good mood. I suggest that there be some soft music to heel us relax.

Those presented suggestions are not just of my own, but also o many other students. We hope our respectable president will pa attention to our suggestions.

By the way, the canteen workers are very patient and alway smiling. So I think if our university offers them better conditions. They will offer us better service.

Best wishes.

Church of Scotland

May 29th,2010    by Ann

The government of the Church of Scotland is Presbyterian, that is, government by ministers and elders, all of whom are ordained to office. The position of the Church of Scotland was defined in the Treaty of Union, 1707, and further safeguarded by the Church of Scotland Act, 1921. About 1, 312 churches are governed locally by Kirk sessions, consisting of ministers and elders. Above the Kirk session is the Presbytery. The General Assemble, consisting of elected ministers and elders, meets annually under the presidency of an elected moderator, who serves for one year. The monarch is normally represented at the General Assembly by the lord High commissioner.

Great Expectations

May 28th,2010    by Ann

In London Pip is befriended by Herbert Pocket, a distant relative of Miss Havisham and a dashing young man about town, who shares the small but cozy1 rooms that have been rented for Pip. Jaggers refuses to answer Pip's questions about the identity of his benefactor, assuring the lad that in due time he will know who has provided the money for him.

Before long Pip takes to the idle life of a London dandy. - He becomes friends with an overbearing aristocrat named Bentley Drummie and learns the sophisticated ways of London society so well that he is embarrassed and irritated by the1 occasional visits of the simple, loyal Joe Gargery.

After Joe leaves, however. Pip feels remorse at the highhanded way in which he has treated him. Once, fit Miss Havisham's request, Pip goes back home will Joe. The elderly recluse'1 and her ward are impressed by the way in which Pip has outgrown his humble beginnings. Miss Havisham even goes so far as to tell Pip that she expects him to fall in love with Estelia. Pip is more than1 willing.

Estella comes to London herself. Soon her dark good looks and aristocratic manner bring her a circle of suitors including Bentley Drummie. Although she still sees Pip occasionally, she obviously is not in love with him.

On Pip's twenty-first birthday, he- receives a surprise visit from Magwitch. the convict he helped years before on the moor. A coarse, unprepossessing man. Magwiteh at first repels the fastidious Pip, but when In1 reveals that he is Pip secret behavior, Pip is horrified. Magwitch tells him that he has made a great deal of money in the colonies where he had been transported, and has now secretly returned to London to see how Pip. whom he regards as a kind of son, has turned out. All he wants is for Pip to become a gentleman, something circumstances never allowed Magwitch to do. Ho is in England under the assumed name' of Provis. If the police ever find evil he has escaped from the convict colony, he will be condernmed to death.

Pip reels at his dilemma. While he knows he should feel grateful to Magwitch. he is loo snobbish to feel much sympathy for this brutalized man. He is also bitterly disillusioned that his benefactor is not Miss lavishing. Nevertheless. Pip vows to help Magwitch who tells him that the man who struggled with him on the moor was a sworn enemy1' named Arthur Compeyson. Pip learns from Herbert Pocket that Compeyson is the very man who jilted Miss Havisham on her wedding day.

Angry at his own folly in assuming Miss Haitian to be his benefactor. Pip goes to the gloomy mansion once more to upbraid the old woman for leading him on. With deliberate cruelty she informs him that Kstella is soon to marry Bentley Drummier. Pip's anguish is precisely what Miss Havisham has counted on. Since her jilting, she has vowed vengeance on all men. In playing with Pip's affection for Kstella, she satisfies her vow.

After Estella's marriage, Pip visits the Havisham mansion again. A fire starts in the mansion. Pip tries to rescue Miss Havisham. He is too late. The house is so filled with the dust and rubble of the past that it goes up like a tinderbox. 3 Miss Havisham dies in the flames.

President George W.Bush's Inaugural Address

May 27th,2010    by Ann

President Clinton, distinguished guests and my fellow citizens, the peaceful transfer of authority is rare in history, yet common in our country. With a simple oath, we affirm old traditions and make new beginnings.

As I begin, I thank President Clinton for his service to our nation. And I thank Vice President Gore for a contest conducted with spirit and ended with grace. I am honored and humbled to stand here, where so many of America's leaders have come before me, and so many will follow.

We have a place, all of us, in a long story—a story we continue, but whose end we will not see. It is the story of a new world that became a friend and liberator of the old, a story of a slave-holding society that became a servant of freedom, the story of a power that went into the world to protect but not to possess, to defend but not to conquer.

It is the American story—a story of flawed and fallible people, united across the generations by grand and enduring ideals. * The grandest of these ideals is an unfolding American promise that everyone belongs, that everyone deserves a chance, that no insignificant person was ever born.

Americans are called to enact this promise in our lives and in our laws. And though our nation has sometimes halted, and sometimes delayed, we must follow no other course.

Through much of the last century, America's faith in freedom and democracy was a rock in a raging sea. Now it is a seed upon the wind, taking root in many nations.

Our democratic faith is more than the creed of our country, it is the inborn hope of our humanity, an ideal we carry but do not own, a trust we bear and pass along. And even after nearly 225 years, we have a long way yet to travel.

While many of our citizens prosper, others doubt the promise, even the justice, of our own country. The ambitions of some Americans are limited by failing schools and hidden prejudice and the circumstances of their birth. And sometimes our differences run so deep, it seems we share a continent, but not

a country.

We do not accept this, and we will not allow it. Our unity, our union, is the serious work of leaders and citizens in every generation. And this is my solemn pledge; I will work to build a single nation of justice and opportunity.

Killer on Wings Is Under Threat

May 26th,2010    by Ann

Could anything be more majestic, serene or threatening than the largest bird of prey in the world, the harpy eagle, soaring above its domain? Weighing nine kilograms and with a 2.2-metre wingspan, this giant of the sky glides at 65 kilometres per hour over dense Brazilian rainforest. Its cruel head with flaring colored crest and huge hooked beak twists constantly from side to side.

It spots a monkey in a treetop 2.5 kilometers away and zeroes in on its prey. The monkey munches on, oblivious to "' the threat. Then the eagle strikes, plucking its prey from its perch with talons borne on legs the thickness of your wrists. The monkey dies instantly, pierced by the talons. The eagle carries the body back to its treetop lair. The famed and feared harpy eagle has killed again.

Whether this frightening creature does indeed soar like other eagles in search of prey is open to conjecture pl. For less is known about the harpy than any other eagle—the remoteness of its habitat sees to P1 that. But it has been seen carrying monkeys, sloth and even small deer back to its nest.

This eagle's extraordinary eyesight is one of its greatest assets. Like many other eagles, it can see between four and eight times as much detail as can humans. The result is an ability to see clearly a small monkey at a distance of up to 2.5 kilometres and to judge distances with pinpoint|4> accuracy. The

latter is an obvious requirement if prey is to be snatched at speed.

It's hard to believe that a creature so well equipped to survive could ever find itself under threat. But with huge tracts of rainforest being felled in Central and South America, the harpy's food sources are harder to find.

The threat posed could soon be similar to that facing the harpy's near relative, the Philippines monkey-eating eagle. This acutely threatened bird was reduced in numbers to fewer than 100 in the wild by the loss of its forest habitat and by the heavy demands of trophy|1! hunters in the Philippines.

Like its Filipino cousin, the harpy eagle nests in the tops of the largest forest trees. It therefore needs an intact forestjo breed. The seemingly invincible harpy is vulnerable for another reason. A mating pair is thought to produce only one eaglet every two years. Harpy eggs take up to 60 days to hatch and chicks take a further 60 days before they learn to fly. What is more, the youngster is fed by the parents for many months after it has learned to fly. Annual breeding then is impossible.

Folklore has long held that the harpy eagle preys on human babies as well as forest animals. To the ancient Mayans of Central America the bird was Moan, a bird of ill omen and death. The harpy from which the eagle derives its name was a mythical wreaker of vengeance. Yet there is no evidence, ac-cording to British naturalist Leslie Brown, that children have ever been taken by the harpy.

But the Anglia Television Company film crew from England that compiled a television documentary titled Fury of the Forest can vouch for the harpy's ferociousness when its nest is threatened. One camera team was attacked when fuming a pair of harpies mating and nesting.

Uses of Ultrasound

May 25th,2010    by Ann

Ultrasound waves can be produced in several ways. One method requires a thin piece of quartz crystal (Quartz is a common mineral found in sand and many rocks) high frequency alternating current is fed into the quartz. The crystal vibrates in step with1 the electric current and produces an ultrasonic wave. Another method is to make use of an electromagnet with a special core usually made of the metal nickel. When a high-frequency alternating current is passed through the electromagnet, the nickel core expands and contracts slightly in step with the current. The expansion and contractions set up ultrasonic vibrations in the surrounding medium.

Ultrasonic waves have a very short wavelength and a high frequency. Because of this many waves—and their energy—are packed into a small space. Scientists have found many ways of putting this concentrated energy to use in scientific research, in industry, and in medicine.

Ordinary sound waves move outward in all directions. But the very short wavelengths of ultrasound waves make it possible to beam ultrasonic in a straight line. Scientists have used straight ultrasonic beams in systems called sonar to locate submarines, schools of fish, and other solid objects underwater.

In sonic systems, sound reflections, or echoes, are used to detect the solid objects. A pulse, or burst, of ultrasonic waves is sent out from an instrument on a ship. The ultrasonic waves travel underwater in a straight line until they strike a solid object. The waves are then reflected the ship. Dials on the instrument inform the operator of the location of the solid object.

To measure the depth of the ocean a type of sonar system called a fathometer3 is used. An operator aboard a ship beams an ultrasonic wave down into the water. The time it lakes for the echo of the sound wave to return to the instrument on the ship gives the operator the depth of the water.

Ultrasound is used in industry to detect flaws hidden deep inside metals or other solid materials. ' An ultrasonic wave is beamed into the part to be tested. The way in which the beam is echoed back into a receiving device tells whether there is a defect in the material and where the defect is.

Liquids made to vibrate' very quickly by ultrasonic waves can be used to clean tools and machine parts. Dishes and other hard objects can be washed quickly in specially designed ultrasonic machine.

Ultrasound is also used in machine for "bloodless surgery" and for other purposes.

These are only some the uses of ultrasound. New uses arc constantly being discovered.

The argument presented seems reasonable but somewhat lacking of prudence.

May 24th,2010    by Ann

The reason, given in the argument, for the establishment of the C Note — a jazz music club can be reduced to the three. First is the choice of the place. Since the nearest jazz club is 65 miles away from Monroe, it is possible to open a new one for the local people. The new one is no doubt able to appeal some guests from the old one only if the guests only consider the distance and the time or the fee spent in the way. Second is the group of the customers. As mentioned in the argument: over 100,000 people attended Monroe's jazz festival last summer, several well-known jazz musicians live in Monroe, and the highest-rated radio program in Monroe is ' Jazz Nightly,' which airs every weeknight. It can be concluded that there is a profound artistical environment or tradition. It can be esteemed that there are at least as many fans as the ones in the other cities. That is to say, the potential customers are reliable. Third is the consumption level. Though the argument does not give the exact figure of Monroe, from the statistics of the whole nation, we got the message that the typical jazz fan spends close to $ 1,000 per year on jazz entertainment. This nationwide study of course includes Monroe.

But only the three above is not enough to determine to establish a business. To set up a new business is a complex task. There are many other aspects to take into consideration. I can cite a list of preparation for establishment of a new business, every of which is decisive. First is the policy of the city to set up a new business, esp. in entertainment. If there is too limitation in this field, you will meet too many unimaginable difficulties in applying for it or running it. Second is the tax. Some city levies heavy taxes on some trades, such as service trades. So it is necessary to investigate clearly the tax rate which determined your profit. Third is the environment. If the public order is bad, the sinister gangs often "patronize" your club. How can you image your business will be thriving? What other aspects should be considered is too many to mention all. The three reasons given in the argument is obvious for everyone to find. But why have not any club been established in this city? We should consider it more deeply and investigate more clearly before we act.

Defining Problems and Dealing with Them

May 21st,2010    by Ann

People in different cultures see problems differently and talk about them differently, as we have seen. What constitutes a problem? And whose problem is it, anyway?

In individualist cultures where people are responsible for the consequences of their own individual actions, problem-solving skills are learned at an early age. Western societies praise and reward the person who solves a problem; some valued employees have the title "troubleshooter" and the responsibility for finding solutions to problems. School exercises in Western cultures involve getting students to compete to see who can reach a solution first.

In low-context cultures problems are objectified and externalized. They lie outside the plan for accomplishing the goal. They are extraneous to the cause-and-effect pattern of Western thinking. English speakers talk about "bugs" that have to be worked out or "wrinkles" that need to be ironed away. Problems need solutions, so they can be erased. Individuals who achieve solutions to problems are valued. Individuals take responsibility for solutions as well as blame for failure to solve problems. Individuals who cause problems also are blamed.

But in collectivist cultures problems are not an individual responsibility. Blame is not attributed to individuals unless an individual who calls attention to a problem seeks some individual advantage. Blame is usually generalized to the group, and the group members work together to find a solution. In process-oriented cultures that emphasize the group acting together, that very cooperation itself is worthwhile. Problems are not externalized or considered nuisances that interrupt and interfere with the accomplishment of a goal. Rather, they are part of the context and process in which the group operates. Working on the problem is as important as solving it. Quality circles in Japan are an example of this approach. The line between what is problem and what is simply the situation is not as clear in collectivist cultures as in individualist cultures that place the problem somehow outside the normal situation. Thus, the way a problem is defined is different.

Problems can be things like a devaluation of the Mexican peso that makes it harder for a gallery owner in Guadalajara to buy art from Canadian Inuit sculptors. When the peso goes down, her costs go up since the Canadian dollar is now more expensive to buy with pesos and Canadian products are also more expensive to buy. Problems can include unusual weather that disrupts the movement of people or goods. Problems are obstacles to business objectives that do not directly result from disagreements between people. Problems can also be people, of course; where harmony and collective agreement are important , disruptive people are a problem for the collective to work together to solve.

New Year's Resolutions

May 20th,2010    by Ann

The New Year is approaching soon. It is time to begin making New Year's resolutions. New Year's resolutions are promises that a person makes to himself. He pledges to keep them during the coming year. Each year many people make resolutions. Of course they have good intentions, but they don't always work out. Very few people actually stick to them.

For example, last year my younger sister's only New Year's resolution was to give up candy for a year. She quitted for two weeks only , and then she gave up and started eating candy again. My father said his resolution was to give up smoking because it was bad for his bronchi. Instead he would get more exercises. But he failed. My friend's sister's resolution was to read one book each month. That didn't work, either! But a friend of mine made a resolution to make his bed and clean his room every day. He kept his resolution , and now his mother is glad that she doesn't have to do those things for him anymore.

It is important to make New Year's resolutions because it forces us to think about how we can improve ourselves. Each year we are given a fresh start, a new beginning, and a chance to make this year better than the one before. All we have to do is stick to our resolutions!

My New Year's resolutions are very special ones this year, and I will try my best to keep them. First of all, I will study harder in school and improve my English. Second, I will practice playing the piano for one hour every day. And third, I will be diligent to clean my bike by myself. I hope I will be able to do all these things that I have promised.
